HIV Transmission?

I was just stumped by a question by a friend of mine today:
"Can HIV be spread by anal intercourse?"
I mean, I know it can... but the question that killed me is how that works.
I would imagine that it involved blood or something...
So I guess my question to you is:
"How does HIV/AIDS spread though Anal Intercourse?"

Transmission occurs through anal intercourse when blood or semen comes in
contact with an opening or rip in the anus or on the penis creating a doorway
for HIV to enter the blood stream.
