Wow, I can’t believe it. I will have survived my first decade since my diagnosis with HIV on May 13th. I have always wondered if this was a day to celebrate or not. Happy HIV Anniversary!!! Just doesn’t sound right, for most probably a bit morbid. Each year when it comes along I can’t help but feel gratitude. Gratitude for life, gratitude for the awareness that I am HIV +, gratitude for family, gratitude for friends, gratitude for alpha, gratitude for alpha-teers, and gratitude for lessons learned and experiences had.

This year I was going to throw a big BASH, “MY DECKAIDS Party.” I have not only lived this long, but not gotten an AIDS diagnosis, yet. That almost wasn’t the case, 2 years ago on my 28th Birthday I was awakened to the fact that I was about to hear those words from my doc and I needed to do something to prevent it. I made some immediate decisions that resulted in me not hearing those words and over the last 2 years have been the healthiest I have ever been since my diagnosis.

It is not all good feelings; honestly I feel a bit of guilt. Guilt that I don’t have an AIDS status, that I have support, that I am healthy, that I have been open with my HIV status, that overall I have responded well to this disease. You may ask why? Or you may not. Though I am a youth of the 90’s I have experienced a lot of death and seen a lot of turmoil due to this virus. My friend died at the age of 23 after having HIV for 5 years from putting a knife to his throat – for most it is more than just taking a pill. Another friend was found in a tub from an overdose or suicide, no matter the cause I put a memorial together for him -his family could care less. Wonderful people that I missed the opportunity to be a friend with due to my personal fears, because they looked sick in a time when it was too intense for me not to look at them without seeing myself. These friends and other strangers that I have not met or may never meet, they are my passion they are why I devote my time to this work. They and I have struggled unnecessarily with this disease, whether it is due from lack of education, lack of acceptance, or lack of support not for what put us at risk for this disease, but rather keeps us from thriving despite our disease. I dedicate this last 10 years and the next 10 years to you. You, who have read this letter, you, who will talk to the people you care about or maybe not even care about. You, who are the key to respectfully and appropriately attend to this epidemic and those impacted. It is very simple, yet will you let us down? I think not.
